Kendrick Lamar- Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst

Kendrick Lamar's album good kid, m.A.A.d city came out this past October, and was fire as soon as he started spitting on the mic. Upon its release it received rave reviews including 4/5 stars from Rolling Stone and a 91/100 from Metacritic. The album is Lamar exploring his adolescence and growing up in Compton and how it affected him and made him who is his today. This track is by far my favorite off the album because it is one that sends chills down my spine each time I hear it. The simple beat mixed with thought provoking lyrics makes for an unforgettable twelve minutes you won't regret. Everyone wants to be remembered, no one wants to be forgotten. Go download the album on iTunes you won't be disappointed.

Joey Bada$$ (feat. Chuck Strangers) - Fromdatomb$

The Brooklyn native ProEra is at it again with a new music video for the third track off of Joey Bada$$'s "1999". If you were wondering where real hip hop has been this might help you find your way back from the labyrinth of "fuck bitches, get money" and other lines regarding spending habits and stripper obsessions. Statik Selektah also lays down some nice scratching on this track to give it some real throwback vibe.

The Electric Sons - Breathing Electricity

The Electric Sons are a duet that put out some great electronic/alternative indie music. Lead vocalist Andrew Miller was a writer for the FX comedy Archer but left his job and created The Electric Sons with Ben Richards. Their roots are in Atlanta, GA and only had two shows in 2012, but have a lineup of shows in the next year that should boom them to the top. Their new track Breathing Electricity offers some uptempo pop beats with amateur vocals. Amateur in the way that gets the job done and could easily get a crowd singing along. This is some great concert music that should take off in the upcoming year.

Flying Lotus - Getting There feat. Niki Randa (Until The Quiet Comes)

If I had to describe this track in one word I would define it as cosmic. "Getting There" is the second
song off of Flying Lotus' new album "Until The Quiet Comes". The seasoned LA beat veteran exudes some deep vibes and experimental instruments with his new project. This track is easily my favorite. Its hard hitting kicks and dusty percussion are a staple of previous FlyLo projects. Niki Randa offers a nice and not too overpowering vocal compliment with beautiful timbre. Check out the extended version of the track below and buy the album at http://warp.net/records/releases/flying-lotus/until-the-quiet-comes

Mike Stud - Happy Ending

Mike Stud doesn't look like a guy who could make a song like this. Honestly, he just looks like the epitome of a douche. Either way, he showed a different side of his music with Happy Ending, recorded over Mika's original song. Mike Stud allows his listeners and viewers to step into the shoes multiple different people who are experiencing issues, and feel hopeless. Mike Stud himself has hit adversity in his life, receiving a full ride scholarship to pitch on Duke University's baseball team, but had to get Tommy Johns surgery. Instead of just sitting around, Mike Stud turned to music and began to climb the ladder and now is on tour.

OnCue - It Usually Goes

OnCue resides in Brooklyn, NY and shows real passion in his work. An up and coming artist on the hip hop scene, OnCue still has some rough edges, but he does a good job of not continuing his aggressive attack that he shows in It Usually Goes throughout all of his songs. He knows how to differentiate his pitch based on the mood of the song but has a good start to a growing career. His mixtapes and other information can be found on his website if you click here.

The Weeknd - High For This (Flufftronix remix & Original)

The Weeknd is remixed by Flufftronix for an dubstep rip throughout the song in his hit, High For This. The wicked bass lines and trippy lyrics make for an interesting listen, and Flufftronix does a good job of leaving some of the original integrity of the song, but revamping enough of it to make it a strong remix. The top video is Flufftronix remix, and the bottom (for comparison if you are interested) is The Weeknd's original High For This track. Enjoy.

Pretty Lights - So Bright

So Pretty Lights allegedly dropped a song off of his new album unintentionally. Somehow, somewhere, it leaked onto the internet, and it consists of his own two hands and vinyl in every song. Instead of using just a beat pad or programs on his computer to create his new album, Pretty Lights went back to how a large portion of the electronic/d.j. movement began. It puts an interesting spin on how it sounds but if the album follows the sampling that was leaked, I'd say we only have things to look forward to off of his upcoming album. Some websites are selling his leaked single, but being the good guy he is, you can download it for free from his website here.

Tayyib Ali - Keystone State of Mind

Tayyib Ali is a young rapper coming up in the game. 18 years old and repping Philly, Tayyib Ali shows passion and soul in his rap. He talks about his life between his past and his dedication to the rap game, and his future and where he hopes to go moving forward. His whole mixtape, Keystone State of Mind, can be downloaded for free off of datpiff here. His mixtape involves 17 song which follow a same pattern as shown in this song. Some of his top hits off of Keystone State of mind are California Love, I Won't Stop, and I'm Alright. Worth the download, and absolutely worth a listen.

Logic - All I Do

Logic follows a heavier modern mainstream rap model but adds some of his own twists to it. The combination of light singing, hook, and rapped verses make for a relaxing song with a very... interesting video. His light singing contrasts the chopped and screwed hook and his rap is somewhere in between. All together it makes for a pretty good listen.

Clear Soul Forces - Get No Better

Clear Soul Forces allows listeners to really get into the lyrics in Get No Better, which comes off of their mixtape Detroit Revolution(s). The song dropped in January 2012 and displays a simple beat which is on a loop throughout the song. This setup focuses a listener into the voice and clever lyrics which the four rappers throw out. The detroit quad has continued their music and is on tour right now. Overall a very solid job on the combination of beat and clever lyrics on this track.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Mary Lambert - Same Love

I am not sure of everyones opinions and this video may not agree with your opinions. If it doesn't, minimize the screen and listen to the song because everything Macklemore says lyrically in this song is just as powerful as the video itself. Macklemore always tells good stories dealing with day to day life for every walks of life. He does a solid job on this song discussing a very controversial issue in the news and throughout the world at the moment. He states his views in a very powerful way and for that, good job.

Kid Cudi - King Wizard (Prod. By Kid Cudi)

Wow. Cudi Comes out with a new track that really shows some hints of wzrd and his old hip hop mentality. Kid Cudi shows off his rapping talent in King Wizard, and can sometimes take you away with the speed of it. Cudi seems to really be returning back to his old voice that you can find in A Kid Named Cudi that he really blew up with in 2008. Hope Cudi keeps dumping tracks out.

Cosmo Jarvis - She's Got You

Cosmo Jarvis is one of the most clever and funny lyricists I have heard in a long time. All his songs leave you with a smile and are pretty easy to relate to, like this one where his best friend's girlfriend has him whipped and he loses touch with his best friends. Cosmo hails from England and has 3 albums out right now which are all worth a listen.

Youth Lagoon - Montana

If you haven't watched this video, do it now. Turn off all distractions turn up the sound and watch this piece of cinematic beauty. Along with one of the best videos on the internet Youth Lagoon's haunting sound will leave you with goosebumps each and every time. This track comes off their album The Year of Hibernation, which came out in 2011. Some other songs worth a listen on the album are Afternoon, 17, and The Hunt. Hope you enjoy.

Funeral Suits- Colour Fade

The Funeral Suits put an interesting twist on music with this song. The four piece alternative band arrived at their beginning in Dublin, Ireland. Their debut album Lily of the Valley dropped the summer of 2012. The lyrics follow the same tone and the background music is controlled and drops an ominous feeling upon the listener. They also found a girl with amazing stamina to be able to run for the greater portion of this video. Watching the video and hearing the song at first seem not to line up... it seems like it would be a video for a hard rock/ heavy metal song, but continues and you can really get into it.

Shelton Harris- Take It Back

The young Shelton Harris comes out with Nothing Better, a mixtape that has some deeper meaning than most radio rap these days. With a short hook that doesn't overdo it, Shelton Harris creates a track that is very listener friendly in my favorite track off of the mixtape, Take It Back. The entire mixtape can be downloaded off of Shelton Harris' website or if you just click here.

Dumbfoundead- Jam Session 2.0

Dumbfoundead. A 26 year old guy of Korean decent born in Argentina and now living in Los Angeles, comes out with strong vocals with 8 others either giving verses or their instrumental love on this Jam Session 2.0. As the description states, "8 people with 5 instruments originally from 4 Continents speaking 3 languages for 1 song.". Dumbfoundead and his friends create a mix of a smooth jazz and turntables underneath the lyrics and create a truly inspirational feeling. Dumbfoundead has become a youtube sensation over the past few years with his epic rap battles which he shows off his lyrical punches against his opponents. Being a high school dropout, Dumbfoundead has proven that education isn't everything.

Aer- Like The Way

So, it is October. Doesn't mean I can't look back to summer and watch a video on a beach instead of looking outside on a foggy cold morning. Aer provides a song with a simple beat behind it and light lyrics overtop. Every cheerful bit of this song reminds me of summer and I hope Aer continues to mess around in this area of hip hop.

Spenca ft. Synclan- Do It Live ft. Bill O'Reilly

Spenca comes out with a dupstep track with Do It Live ft. Bill O'Reilly. The mixture of comical verses from the famous Bill O'Reilly freak out combines with samples of heavy bass drops and covers a wide range of pitches. The track isn't a aggressive punch you in the face track, but it lets you know its playing. Solid job Spenca.

Monsters Calling Home - Growing Up

With a voice like lead singer Alex Hwang's it takes all of two seconds to become mesmerized by this song. The entrancing quality of Hwang's voice coupled with the beautiful voice of Sally Kang, all the while thrown on top of a phenomenal arrangement we have this great track by Monsters Calling Home. Monsters Calling Home is a group of six friends living in Los Angeles who are putting out folk music that has the potential to rival the likes of Mumford and Sons. This track comes off their self titled EP, Monsters Calling Home, which is available for purchase on iTunes here. This EP is worth the buy, and you should also take a look at some of their other videos which are self produced and done incredibly well, MCH videos.

Ellie Goulding- Hanging On (Sound Remedy Remix)

A little Ellie Goulding every now and then can cheer someone up, between her hits found in Lights and Starry Eyed, there have been many dubstep/ techno remixes of it. The London superstar has had a recent remix by Sound Remedy which proves to be simple, yet tasteful. They still allow for Ellie Goulding's strong vocals to be present throughout, yet control the song with the solid bass drops and overwhelming technical sounding portions of the song. This all added together proves to be one of my favorite remixes of any Ellie Goulding song.

Sam Lachow ft. Raz- Nothing's Gonna Change

A personal favorite of mine, Sam Lachow is a young rapper who just dropped a mixtape, which can be downloaded here from datpiff. Accompanied with Raz in the entire 5 Good Reasons Ep, Sam Lachow experiments with his own beats and drops some solid lyrics overtop. Truly an underground rapper, Sam Lachow is waiting for his big break and I can only imagine it will be coming to him very soon. Other songs of Sam Lachow worth mentioning are 23rd Avenue, Illegal, and Little Man Big City, found on his other mixtapes Brand New Bike and Avenue Music Ep.

Kid Cudi ft. King Chip- Just What I Am

Kid Cudi comes back with King Chip (a.k.a. Chip tha Ripper) with Just What I Am. I say comes back because Cudi had a minor leave of absence with his project in wzrd. Just What I Am is just what I have been looking for from Cudi for a while now, it appears he is revisiting his grassroots in hip hop. The lyrics are backed by a syfy beat and Cudi's lyrics remind a listener of what he use to be and hopefully for all of us deep down still is. I hope Cudi stays on track with this new/old form.

Tarik- Everything I Am

Tarik brings a real rap to us in Everything I Am. The old school, calm piano in the background brings an emotional and deep meaning to this rap and allows listeners to enjoy the lyrics for what they are. He talks about real issues and puts a listener in a place that allows them to feel like they are right there with him.

Broke for Free- The Gold Lining

The initial impression of Broke For Free's track The Gold Lining smacks me with a memory of a UPS commercial, but the beat continues to open into a mesmerizing array of sound. The sounds continue to entrance throughout the entirety of the five minutes and ten seconds. The highs and lows of this song keep a listener on their toes throughout and is a great indie track to open up with. I hope to hear more from the seemingly empty history of Broke For Free, because if it is anything like this, we have something to look forward to.

Jet Life ft. Trademark da Skydiver, Young Roddy, Mikey Rocks, Curren$y- 1st place

A mixture of rappers overtop of a chilled out background beat allows for a relaxed flow. The result of this combination comes in Jet Life's 1st place featuring Trademark da Skydiver, Young Roddy, Mikey Rocks, and Curren$y. The combination of rappers controls the beat with strong lyrics. Enjoy.

Joey Bada$$ ft. Capital STEEZ - Survival Tactics

Our first video comes from Brooklyn, NY. Joey Bada$$, a 17 year old, spits heavy lyrics and is joined by Capital Steez to revisit what hip hop used to be. The lyrical geniuses are wise beyond their years and show it on this track. Joey Bada$$'s mixtape 1999 includes survival tactics. The other songs follow a similar template and is well worth the download from Datpiff found here.

Background

This blog is created for those who enjoy music for what it is. It is not what is new or hot, it is what we listen to. We hope that everyone who follows along can enjoy it, as we simply will post as we hear songs, old and new, that we like. Combination of underground, house, dubstep, indie, and many other genres will be posted throughout this blogs life (which there is no guess on its life expectancy). Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
